Download 3dmax2012

In my experience of developing the Lucky Dragon Mahjong scoring rules, I can download 3dmax2012 conclusively say the most important rule is the Basal Score. This is download 3dmax2012 the number of points added to any winning hand.

Like many, I’m sure, I learned to download 3dmax2012 play with the standard rulebook packaged with mahjong sets - the download 3dmax2012 Chinese Classical rules. I think we ended up following the same path that download 3dmax2012 many do - we got intoxicated with the possibilities of doubling. We progressively sought out higher-scoring hands until we were all going for download 3dmax2012 all pungs or download 3dmax2012 cleared suit, and hoarded winds and dragons. We decided the 300-point maximum for download 3dmax2012 a hand was cramping our style, so we got rid of it, putting no download 3dmax2012 limit on the maximum score.

It also started to become testy when someone made a “junk” hand - i.e. no download 3dmax2012 doubles. So in our ultimate wisdom we also got rid of the download 3dmax2012 basal score. Then if someone made a “junk” hand they got nothing for download 3dmax2012 it. This had the desired effect, and everyone was trying to download 3dmax2012 make that magical score with a bunch of doubles. It started to download 3dmax2012 not be fun anymore. It is interesting to read about the download 3dmax2012 Mahjong craze of the 1920s in America, when the popular play of the download 3dmax2012 game apparently went through a similar process. Unfortunately back then the download 3dmax2012 craze died down and mostly only Jewish Americans continued to play.

Though I’m not terribly familiar with Old Style and download 3dmax2012 Japanese rules, I think those may have developed from a similar situation. These continue to download 3dmax2012 be used widely, so I presume they don’t suffer from download 3dmax2012 the same diminishing fun as what we went through. They also appear to download 3dmax2012 be motivated by the goal of simplicity, as one of the download 3dmax2012 characteristics of Chinese Classical is it takes some calculating to keep score. But now I’m diverging from the subject.

While we were in the download 3dmax2012 funk previously described, I discovered the Chinese Official rules. This was my first exposure to download 3dmax2012 the concepts of New Style scoring methods, and I saw this download 3dmax2012 as a good way to diversify our play and therefore make it download 3dmax2012 more fun. First we tried to play with the Chinese Official rules. This was a download 3dmax2012 disaster, for one particular reason - the Minimum Score rule. We spent so much time looking over the download 3dmax2012 rules to figure out if we had enough points to go out that download 3dmax2012 we had no fun at all.

No doubt this download 3dmax2012 could have been improved by getting over a learning curve, but we never tried those rules again. I think it’s a download 3dmax2012 bad feature of a rule set to have the learning curve be download 3dmax2012 mandatory. One feature of the Lucky Dragon Mahjong rule set is download 3dmax2012 inexperienced players can hold their own, so anyone can join a download 3dmax2012 tournament and be competitive with just the basics. But now I’m diverging from the topic again.

I decided to download 3dmax2012 make my own New Style system that was similar to download 3dmax2012 Chinese Official but didn’t have download 3dmax2012 the Minimum Score rule. So, we transitioned to an additive system instead of the download 3dmax2012 doubling that had us obsessed before. The new diversity of scoring possibilities made the download 3dmax2012 experience more fun, but we still had a balance problem where download 3dmax2012 small hands were frowned on. We also had the problem that download 3dmax2012 dragons and winds were overly depreciated in value.

So, we decided to download 3dmax2012 make our rules somewhat of a hybrid of Chinese Classical and download 3dmax2012 Chinese Official. We added back a scoring table for pungs and download 3dmax2012 kongs - exposed, concealed, simples, terminals, winds, lucky winds, dragons. We also adjusted the download 3dmax2012 points so there wasn’t a download 3dmax2012 doubling effect and an unbalanced amount of points for particular pungs/kongs. We were happy with the download 3dmax2012 diversity of the system, but we still had the problem of small hands causing angst.

So I finally learned the download 3dmax2012 Cardinal Rule of Mahjong Scoring - the Basal Score. We originally played with the download 3dmax2012 big 20-point Basal Score of Chinese Classical rules and found that download 3dmax2012 just going out as fast as you can was the download 3dmax2012 best strategy. Because of this and our changing rules we completely eliminated it. Too big a Basal Score results in the problem just specified - it’s a download 3dmax2012 disadvantage to go for more than the quickest possible hand. It kills diversity. Too small a download 3dmax2012 Basal Score results in the opposite problem - it’s a download 3dmax2012 disadvantage to go for the quickest possible hand. This is not as bad for download 3dmax2012 diversity, but it makes for long hands and people tend to download 3dmax2012 be upset if a “junk” hand is made.

The Basal Score is download 3dmax2012 the key principle of balance. The fundamental rules of making a download 3dmax2012 basic hand in mahjong must be valid. This requires having a download 3dmax2012 Basal Score. There also must be a reward for more advanced hands. That reward must have download 3dmax2012 the proper balance with the Basal Score so that there is download 3dmax2012 no one strategy that is clearly advantageous. This is the way to download 3dmax2012 have maximum diversity, and at the same time allows a beginner to download 3dmax2012 play with just the basic rules and be competitive.

In other words, properly balancing the download 3dmax2012 Basal Score is the key to maximizing Fun.

The Scott/Stillman Lucky Dragon Mahjong club is the very first! We have download 3dmax2012 been playing for many years now and have developed the scoring rules called Lucky Dragon Mahjong. This is a family group of usually six people and sometimes more. We play about four tournaments a download 3dmax2012 year now, and have a specially designed trophy containing the names of each champion and download 3dmax2012 the month and year of the tournament they won.

The format we play by is download 3dmax2012 four players are in the game at one time, and download 3dmax2012 when someone discards they leave the game to be replaced by someone else. When we have download 3dmax2012 enough players we keep multiple tables going. The Lucky Dragon Mahjong scorecard software allows for download 3dmax2012 many more than four players reckoned in the scoring where any four can download 3dmax2012 be chosen to be in a particular hand.

We usually try to play three matches. The Lucky Dragon Mahjong scorecard software also allows for cumulative scorekeeping over multiple matches.

I will post updates here after our latest tournaments.

I live in the download 3dmax2012 Dallas area and will eventually get around to forming a Dallas Lucky Dragon Mahjong club.
